The Things We Don’t Own

There is a Chanel box sitting behind the toilet at our summer camp. It is a slightly absurd symbol of luxury in a deliberately simple place—and a reminder that some of the richest parts of life cannot be parked in a driveway, hung in a closet or placed in a display cabinet.

North America seems to be covered with unusual landmarks and giant statues of all sorts. Seeing these sights is like an initiation into a secret club. Forever after you have this hidden knowledge of a secret place. Even if that place is a giant shrine to corn.
